Family and Consumer Science

In the 6th grade students meet for approximately 40 minutes each day, 5 days a week for one quarter(9 weeks). Students are introduced to sewing by hand and putting on a button via a small take home project. The student is also introduced to working in a kitchen which entails the subjects of kitchen & food safety, reading a recipe, how to use measuring equipment, and safe operation of both a conventional oven and a microwave oven. Finally we discuss values and ethics and how they affect our decision-making processes.

7th grade students also meet for approximately 40 minutes each day, 5 days a week for one quarter (9 weeks). Students learn to operate a sewing machine and make a take home project after completion of the projects directions. Food preparation and nutrition are concentrated on making healthy snacks, like pretzels, while learning to read and understand the importance of nutrition labels on store bought food. A short unit on babysitting is followed by a further discussion on ethics and how they affect our decision-making processes.

8th grade students meet for approximately 40 minutes each day, 5 days a week for a full semester (18 weeks) Students build upon the knowledge and skills they learned in grades 6 and 7. They choose from a variety of sewing projects and a focus on cooperative learning is encouraged through small groups with similar projects and experience. The unit on nutrition and food preparation has a strong emphasis on consumer education; meal and food store shopping and planning, working on a budget, credit and debit card usage. How to shop within a budget and what good shoppers looks for and compares. Foods are prepared while keeping the food's nutrients in check. Lastly, ethics are discussed and how they affect our decision-making process.
