Rhodes School District 84.5

Instrumental Music

All students at Rhodes who are currently in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to be screened for enrollment in one of our bands. The band program benefits students in many ways. Not only are students challenged through performance in high quality musical organizations, but they are also taught principles of success that will help them now and in their futures. Each band member receives a weekly lesson. Band grading is a combination of lesson preparation and band performance.

The Rhodes Senior Band is our primary instrumental performing organization at Rhodes School. The Senior Band generally consists of students in grades 4 through 8 that have qualified by audition. Auditions take place each fall, winter, and spring. The Senior Band meets daily before the school day begins.

The Senior Band has travelled throughout the central and eastern United States and to Canada, winning concert band competitions in Des Moines, Iowa; Sandusky, Ohio; Gatlinburg, Tennessee; Windsor and Toronto, Canada; Hershey, Pennsylvania; Cincinnati, Ohio; St. Louis Missouri; and Gurnee, Illinois. The band was the winner of the Illinois Superstate Band Contest at the University of Illinois in May of 1994, and appeared as the state Honor Band in May of 1995. The Senior Band was also chosen to open an Illinois State P.T.A. Convention in downtown Chicago.

Instrumental instruction begins in the 4th grade at Rhodes School. However, older children often start an instrument at the same time. All 4th graders are screened each fall for enrollment in the band. Candidates are shown a video presentation, given a music listening evaluation, and afforded the opportunity to try several instruments prior to our annual Recruitment Night in September. Qualified students are then placed in the Beginning Band. Beginning Band meets twice per week after school.

All 5th and 6th graders (as well as those not qualifying for Senior Band) are members of the Rhodes Junior Band. This is essentially a training group for our Senior Band. It meets three times per week during the activity period of the school day.

All 5th through 8th grade Rhodes band members perform a solo, and many perform in a large and/or small ensemble at Solo/Ensemble Contest each February. Rhodes students earn an average of over 88% Superior ratings in this competition each year.

Chicagoland Band Festival

Rhodes School District 84.5 has sponsored the Chicagoland Band Festival since 1997. This outstanding Junior High and Middle School Band Festival takes place in November of each year. It features two advanced performing organizations. Nationally recognized guest conductors have included James D. Ployhar, Douglas Court, Douglas Akey, Mark Williams, and Richard Fischer, Robert Sheldon, and Deborah Sheldon. Auditions take place at either Rhodes School in River Grove or Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove each October.

A very active and supportive parents organization takes care of all fund raising activities for our music department. Each year our band and chorus members participate in a candy sale, help with Market Day, and assist with other projects set up by our Rhodes Music Parents Organization. Officers meet on a regular basis with the band and chorus directors and a school administrator. Without the dedication of our parents, an active program like ours would never be possible.
